Your L.E.A.N. Cheatsheet
Don’t have all the info about a product? Not sure where to start? While food is complex and there are certainly exceptions, here’s a simple acronym that will help to consistently point you in the right direction:
- L
- Local or global? Where did your food come from? Strive to eat locally and regionally as much as your area allows, especially when seasonal food is at its peak.
- E
- Energy? How much energy did it take to bring the food to your plate, including processing, packaging, transportation and temperature of food? In general, the closer something looks to its original state (right from the ground, animal, tree, etc.) the less energy it requires.
- A
- Animal or plant? A diet rich in plant foods, with modest or limited amount of animal products, is the key foundation of a healthier, greener, leaner diet.
- N
- Necessary? Is this a critical food that meets both your personal health and weight goals? If so, can you find it in an eco-friendly label, such as organic or Fair Trade? If not, can you treat it as the occasional splurge, rather than a daily indulgence?
